Buying Used Coilovers: The 5-Minute Inspection That Saves You $800

A used set of coilovers is either the best value part on your build or four dead dampers with nice paint, and the difference takes about five minutes to check. This is the inspection, in the order you should do it, whether the set is in front of you or you are working from a seller's photos.
The money logic first: a healthy used set of a mainstream brand commonly sells for roughly half of new. A set that needs a full rebuild plus new top mount bearings can eat most of the difference between used and new price in service costs. Every check below exists to stop you paying healthy-set money for rebuild-candidate hardware.
Before you look at the coilovers, look at the story
Ask three questions up front, because the answers frame everything else:
- What car were they on, and how was it used? "Street car, never tracked" and "my drift missile" are both fine answers, but they set different price expectations. What you want to hear is a straight answer. Hesitation about what chassis they even fit is a red flag, because it usually means the seller is flipping parts they know nothing about.
- How old are they and have they been rebuilt? Dampers are consumables. Seals and gas charge degrade with years and use. A ten-year-old set that has never been serviced is priced as a rebuild candidate no matter how clean it looks. Receipts for a recent rebuild are worth real money.
- Why are they being sold? "Sold the car" and "went to a different brand" are normal. Vague answers on this plus vague answers on history is a pattern.

The 5-minute physical inspection
1. Shafts (60 seconds, the most important check)
Wind or compress each damper enough to expose the shaft, or ask for photos with the bump stop and boot pulled back. The shaft is the polished rod the damper slides on. You are looking for:
- Pitting, rust spots or score lines. A pitted shaft chews out the new seal on every rebuild. This is often the difference between "rebuildable" and "buy a new damper", so any shaft damage drops the price hard.
- A uniform mirror finish. Discolouration or a worn band where the seal rides means high mileage.
A film of oil residue with road grime stuck to it is normal life. Clean shafts on an old set means someone wiped them for the photos, which is fine, but check the next item carefully.
2. Leaks (60 seconds)
Look at the damper body just below the shaft seal and around the base. There are three states:
- Dry and dusty: good.
- A light weep or oily film: the seal is on its way out. Not a disaster on a rebuildable damper, but you are buying a service, so pay accordingly.
- Wet, dripping, or oil tracked down the body: that damper is done. It has lost oil, which means it has also likely lost gas pressure, and it is not damping properly no matter how it feels by hand.
One leaking damper on a set of four still means a rebuild visit and postage both ways. Price the set as if you are servicing at least the leaking pair, because rebuilding one corner and not its partner gives you mismatched damping across the axle.
3. The hand test (60 seconds)
With the spring wound off tension or the damper out of the car, push the shaft through its stroke and let it return:
- It should move with smooth, consistent resistance through the whole stroke, harder to compress quickly than slowly.
- Dead spots, notchy movement, or a section with no resistance means aeration or lost gas: rebuild territory.
- A gas-charged shaft that self-extends slowly when released is a good sign. One that flops and stays put has lost its charge.
- Listen. Squelching or slurping sounds mean air in the oil.
The hand test cannot confirm a damper is properly valved, but it reliably catches a dead one.
4. Adjusters (30 seconds)
Turn each damping adjuster from full soft to full hard and count the clicks:
- All four should have the same number of clicks with a positive, even detent feel.
- A spinning adjuster with no clicks or no change in feel is disconnected internally. On some designs that is a cheap fix, on others it means the adjuster needle is damaged. Assume the worst until proven otherwise.
- Seized adjusters on the lower body often just mean corrosion, but corrosion bad enough to seize an adjuster usually shows elsewhere too.
5. Threads, collars and lock rings (60 seconds)
The threaded bodies are what make a coilover a coilover, and they are what corrosion attacks first, especially on cars that lived outdoors or near the coast:
- Every spring seat and lower mount collar should turn by hand or with the C-spanners. Ask the seller to demonstrate on video if buying remotely. A seized collar can sometimes be rescued with heat and patience, and sometimes the body is scrap.
- Look for crushed or crossed threads where a lock ring has been hammered.
- Surface rust on steel bodies is cosmetic if the threads still run. Flaky, layered rust is not.
6. Tops, mounts and bushes (60 seconds)
- Pillow ball top mounts: hold the top hat and rock the shaft. Play or clunk means the spherical bearing is worn. They are replaceable, but price them in.
- Rubber-mounted tops: look for cracked or separated rubber.
- Lower mounts and brackets: check for bends, cracked welds, and ovalled bolt holes, particularly on anything that has been drifted. Look at the bump stops too: destroyed bump stops mean the car ran out of travel constantly, which is hard life for a damper.
- Springs: rub marks and chipped coating are cosmetic. A collapsed or cracked coil, or two springs of visibly different free length side by side, is not.
Matching the set to your car
Confirm the exact model and chassis fitment before anything else. Coilovers for the "same" car can differ by year, by front strut vs wishbone design, and by weld-on vs bolt-on rear brackets. Ask for the model sticker or engraving on the damper body, and check the spring rates written on the springs. A set wearing 12kg comp springs on both ends is a valving mismatch waiting to happen on a street-driven car, and re-springing plus a revalve belongs in your offer maths.

The price logic
Put it together like this. Start from the going rate for a healthy used set of that model. Subtract a rebuild for any leaking or dead corner, top mount bearings if they knock, and springs if the rates are wrong for you. If the number you reach is close to new price, buy new. If the set checks out clean with service history, pay fair money quickly, because clean sets of the popular brands do not last long.
