Street legal in Australia

How offset actually works

Offset (ET) is the distance in millimetres from the wheel's mounting face to its centreline. Lower or negative offset pushes the whole wheel outboard: more poke, more guard risk, more front-on presence. Higher offset tucks the wheel inboard, eating the gap to your coilover instead. Width changes split the difference. Go two inches wider at the same offset and one inch lands on each side, which is why width and offset only ever mean anything together.

One trap worth knowing before you compare listings. Rim width in J is measured across the bead seats, not lip to lip, and there is a flange of about 12.7mm either side on top of it. So backspacing quoted to the bead seat and backspacing quoted to the flange differ by roughly 12mm, which at drift tolerances is the difference between fitting and not. This calculator measures to the flange throughout, because the flange is the metal that actually hits things. Ask a seller which way they measured before you send a deposit.

For drift setups the inner number usually bites first. Steering angle sweeps the inner barrel through the space beside the strut, so a wheel that clears when parked can still saw through a coilover sleeve at full lock. That is why angle-kitted fronts generally want a higher offset than the same width on stock steering, not a lower one. If there is angle hardware in the picture, read the angle kit wheel clearance guide and protect the backspacing number harder than the poke number.

The tyre matters as much as the rim. A tyre narrower than its design rim pulls the sidewall inboard until the rim lip becomes the widest point of the whole assembly, which is exactly why stretch buys guard clearance. A tyre on or above its design rim bulges past the lip and hits the guard before the wheel ever gets there. The drawing shows this: watch the sidewall change shape as you change tyre size.

Common questions

What offset do I need for an S13?

On a sorted S-chassis at drift ride height with a couple of degrees of camber, 18x9.5 from the mid +20s up sits flush to tucked front and rear. Drop into the teens and low twenties and you are into roll-the-guard territory, and 18x10 or wider below +15 wants a roll, a pull and real camber. At 17 inch, 17x9 in the high teens to mid twenties with rolled guards is the classic S13 fitment. A 180SX is tighter at the rear than the S13 coupe and runs out of room first. These are bands, not single numbers, because ride height, camber and tyre choice genuinely move every one of them.

Will S14 wheels fit an S13?

Not without a hub change. An S13 and 180SX are 4x114.3 from factory; an S14 and S15 are 5x114.3. Five-stud converted S13s, a very common mod using S14, R32 or R33 hubs and knuckles, take 5x114.3 and can run S14 wheels. If a conversion is in the plan, do it before buying wheels, because it completely changes what you are shopping for. Never run wobble bolts or adapters to force a wrong-PCD wheel onto a drift car: the loads through a wheel mid-slide are exactly the loads that find shortcuts.

How much can you legally change wheel offset in Australia?

VSB14 Section LS, the national baseline every state's rules sit on top of, allows a passenger car track increase of 25mm in total across an axle, which is 12.5mm a side. Track changes by how far the wheel's centreline moves, so it is the offset change that counts, not the poke change: adding width at the same ET pushes the outer lip out but moves the centreline not at all. The tyre must also sit inside the guard with the wheels straight ahead. General information, not advice. Are wheel spacers legal in Australia?

Under VSB14 Section LS, spacers are not permitted unless they were fitted as original equipment. That is a separate rule from the 25mm track limit, so a spacer is not made acceptable by keeping the total track increase inside the allowance. Buy the offset you need rather than spacing a wheel out to it.

How much clearance does rolling a guard actually buy?

Roughly 10mm, with a pull buying roughly another 15mm on top. Past about 28mm past the guard lip, flares are the honest answer rather than a last resort. Those figures are reverse-engineered from this site's own published chart rather than measured: the chart calls an S13 or 180SX front 18x9.5 flush at +25, which puts the guard lip at 105.9mm of poke. It then calls +15 to +25 needs-roll, landing a few millimetres past that plane, and below +15 needs-pull. Every other row in the chart falls in the right band when checked the same way.

Should I run a lower offset with an angle kit?

No, the opposite, and this is the one people get backwards. Angle-kitted and drop-knuckle fronts want a higher, more tucked offset than the same width on stock steering. A kit that pushes the ball joint outboard has already spent scrub radius, and a higher offset pulls the wheel back toward the hub face while moving the inner barrel away from the strut. European kit makers commonly publish a front backspacing target of roughly 135 to 140mm measured to the bead seat, which is about 148 to 153mm measured to the flange the way this tool measures. Treat that as a front-only starting point tied to specific kits, and check your own car at full lock and full compression before buying wheels, because there is no reliable millimetres-per-degree rule and anyone quoting one is guessing.

Does a stretched tyre help a wheel clear the guard?

Yes, mechanically. A tyre narrower than its design rim pulls the sidewall inboard until the rim lip becomes the widest point of the whole assembly; a tyre on or above its design rim bulges past the lip and hits the guard before the wheel does. That direction is real and it is why the calculator reports how far the tyre stands proud of the lip. Two honest limits: no kit manufacturer or documented build cites stretch as a fix for full-lock rubbing, so using it that way is plausible reasoning rather than established practice, and meaningful stretch raises the risk of sidewall bubbling, splitting and debeading, with a roadworthy grey area that varies by state. Use a little if it helps. Do not use it to rescue a fitment that is fundamentally wrong.

What is the difference between offset and backspacing?

Offset (ET) is measured from the wheel's centreline to its mounting face; backspacing is measured from the mounting face to the inner edge. Convert with backspacing in mm = width in inches x 25.4 / 2 + offset. The trap is which inner edge: a rim's quoted width in J is the bead seat width, not lip to lip, and there is a flange of about 12.7mm either side on top of it, so backspacing quoted to the bead seat and backspacing quoted to the flange differ by roughly 12mm. At drift tolerances that is the difference between fitting and not. This calculator measures to the flange throughout, because the flange is the metal that actually contacts things. How accurate is this calculator?

The S13, S14 and S15 presets are anchored to rows this site's own published fitment chart calls flush, so their guard planes come from published data. Every other chassis in the dropdown is an explicitly unsourced starting point rather than a fact about that car, and the tool says so on screen: correct it to what you actually run and the answer follows your car rather than our guess. The guard plane itself is never invented. It is derived from the wheel you run now plus one plain-language answer about where that wheel sits.
